NUCAFE is a hybrid farmer-owned social enterprise whose main business focus is robusta coffee value addition and export. NUCAFE has its main headquarters in Namanve-Kampala
district with hubs across the country; in Greater Bushenyi and Masaka districts, West-Nile, Mt.Elgon and Bugisu regions. NUCAFE is an umbrella organization of different farmer
associations to which it provides access to markets and mobilizes resources for.

From humble beginnings in pursuit of its vision, “Coffee Farmers profitably own their coffee along the coffee value chain for sustainable livelihoods, consumer satisfaction, and societal transformation”. As a hybrid organization, NUCAFE runs a business entity for its own sustainability, and then it runs impact-oriented programs through its two impact entities; NUCAFE Grading Limited (NGL) and NUCAFE respectively. In 2021, NUCAFE separated its business entities into NUCAFE Grading Limited (NGL) focusing on the business for profit and NUCAFE Limited focused on impact of the farmers’ association.

Since inception, NUCAFE has had significant achievements and some humbling lessons have been learned. Some of these included increasing the membership base of coffee farming households from 150,000 to over 1.2 million, influencing the formulation of the national coffee policy and improving gender relations among coffee farming households and this has greatly impacted on increased production quantities and quality coffee produced.

The enterprise joined the Women in Agriculture Impact Investment (WAII) Facility in 2022 when the call for applications was rolled out. It is among the 16 Agri-SMEs that were selected for the first investment advisory cycle. Finding XY established the Women in Agriculture Impact Investment (WAII) Facility to accelerate early growth stage of SMEs investment using a blend of instruments and a gender lens approach through bridge financing cover and loan-discount approach using Covid relief investment support.

WAII is made possible by the generous support of the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under the Feed the Future Uganda Inclusive Agricultural Markets Activity and is implemented by Finding XY.
