Even though rice is increasingly becoming a staple in the country, especially in the urban areas, available statistics show that Uganda is a net importer of rice and will continue to be so unless domestic production improves significantly (EPRC, 2016). One would ask themselves why? Today, rice is grown mainly by small-scale farmers throughout the country which implies low volumes and low quality since most of these farmers can't afford the required technologies. Uganda's population growth rate is at 3.5% thus the demand for rice is expected to rise.

Faine Foods Enterprise Ltd saw an opportunity and started ideating on ways of adding value to the rice and present it in a more market competitive state. The enterprise is piloting with a few technologies to ensure the final product is up-to -the standard.
