Vertical and Micro-gardening is a Ugandan urban farming start-up social enterprise located in Kampala. The enterprise’s flagship product is The Vertical Farm that is comprised of vertical stackable soil beds, with a vermicomposting chamber in the center which is used to compost biodegradable household waste, the castings of which can then be used to fertilize the crops, helping to keep inputs low but still organic.

The Agri-SME was launched in 2014 as a project and incorporated as company in 2017 and has since designed, manufactured, and distributed its pioneering flagship product. VMG also offers a wide range of products and services including seedlings, earthworm breeding stock, agricultural extension services and after-sale services for Vertical Farms.

Since inception, Vertical and Micro-gardening has impacted over 1000 households across the country, and won several awards including prestigious and competitive MIT Popular Choice Award.  VMG contributes to climate-smart agriculture and intensification of agricultural production within the urban marginalized, middle income and rich communities with limited land at their disposal. VMG also contributes in eradication of poverty and hunger while promoting women’s entrepreneurship and empowerment.

The enterprise joined the Women in Agriculture Impact Investment (WAII) Facility early this year following a roll out of call for applications to join the facility.  It is among the 21 Agri-SMEs that were selected for the first investment advisory cycle. Finding XY established the Women in Agriculture Impact Investment (WAII) Facility to accelerate early growth stage of SMEs investment using a blend of instruments and a gender lens approach through bridge financing cover and loan-discount approach using Covid relief investment support.

WAII is made possible by the generous support of the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under the Feed the Future Uganda Inclusive Agricultural Markets Activity and is implemented by Finding XY.
