The rates of waste accumulation in urban areas, especially in developing countries, has been on the rise in the last couple of years. In Kampala alone, findings revealed that 846,155 kg/day of household solid waste was generated at a rate of 0.56 kg/person/day. Besides solid waste, pit latrines and landfills are filling up with a barely organized system to carry out the emptying /sorting processes. With such big amounts of waste accumulations and inappropriate disposal, not only is peoples’ health at stake but the environment is neither spared.
It’s with such concerns that through the Austrian Red Cross and Uganda Red Cross Society, with funding from the Austrian Development Agency, a Waste Collection and Management Center is being constructed in Imvepi Refugee Camp.
